County to kickoff statewide mortgage assistance program

LAWRENCEVILLE -- Gwinnett County and the Georgia Department of Community Affairs will hold a kickoff event Thursday for a statewide mortgage assistance program.

Gwinnett Board of Commissioners Chairwoman Charlotte Nash and Department of Community Affairs Commissioner Mike Beatty will announce the metro Atlanta start of HomeSafe Georgia. HomeSafe Georgia "provides temporary mortgage payment assistance for homeowners who are unemployed or underemployed through no fault of their own," according to a news release.

The program's goal is to help 18,000 Georgia families.

The event will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday outside the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center, 75 Langley Drive in Lawrenceville, if weather permits. In case of rain, the kickoff will be hosted inside.

Guest speakers will include Derick Corbett, chief of staff to Congressman Rob Woodall, and Bishop William Sheals of Hopewell Baptist Church.

The program's goal is to help 18,000 Georgia families. I hope this isn't another program that punishes the folks that did all the right things by buying a smaller house and making payments. Tell us more about this program and who will qualify and what are the benefits.
