DULUTH -- Police have charged a Duluth man with trying to run over two Gwinnett officers during a DUI stop early Saturday that sparked a vehicle chase.

Jose Zuniga-Rios, 36, is charged with two felony counts of aggravated assault upon a police officer, simple battery and a list of traffic citations including DUI.

An employee at a sports bar at Satellite Boulevard and Pleasant Hill Road told police Zuniga-Rios was "trashed" when he stumbled to a 1999 Dodge Ram 1600 and drove away from the establishment about 12:30 p.m. Saturday, according to a Gwinnett police report.

Police caught up with the truck, which was swerving across lanes of the boulevard, a short distance away. Zuniga-Rios initially refused to stop but then parked the truck at a red light in the middle of the West Liddell Road intersection. Police in two cruisers moved in, but the driver wasn't cooperating, pushing away one officer who opened his door and latched onto his arm, the report states.

Zuniga-Rios put the truck in drive, turned the wheel left to brush one officer away, then right in the direction of another officer, before speeding away, the report states. No injuries were reported.

"I instantly thought he was trying to hit me or run me over," one officer wrote.

Police pursued the truck to a nearby apartment complex, where Zuniga-Rios parked and surrendered. En route to jail, he told police "he knew he was in trouble but wanted to say he was sorry for trying to hit us," an officer wrote.

Jail records indicate Zuniga-Rios, a native of Mexico, is being held for federal immigration authorities. He remains at the Gwinnett County Jail without bond.

He's lucky he didn't get shot. Assault with a motor vehicle on a police officer is grounds for use of deadly force. Hope he does get sent back to Mexico before he kills someone.

What? Dictator Obama did not grant this guy a "work permit"? 3,000 illegal aliens a day are being granted such. One more very good reason to throw Obama out.

Although all the above comments are valid points...why would a bar...motivated by profit fill someone to the gills with liquor and not expect these results. The bar has acted very irresponsibly in not cutting him off and as a final result sicking the cops on him. Alchohol awareness classes for bar people teach such things as recognition of levels of impairment....methods of reducing the ability of getting a drink served..and responsibility of cutting off the individual from future beverages. For the bar employee to say he was s... faced shows there was and probably still symptomatic problems with the bar regarding the safety of the community. They need to be fined...put on a probationary status or have their pouring liscence yanked off the wall. It just doesn't make since for a bar employee to whine about their actions...and his after making such an incredible bad call by continuing to serve a "trashed" person and then not try to difuse the situation responsibly. An impaired person is not completly responsible for their own actions and that is why dramshop laws or third party liability laws are on the books.

That has got to be one of the top five most ignorant comments I've ever read on here. Let's just blame McDonald's and Burger King for all those heart attacks and strokes. OMG...Someone out there may even be DWHBP...Driving With High Blood Pressure. Cut 'em off...
