DULUTH -- Police have charged a Duluth man with trying to run over two Gwinnett officers during a DUI stop early Saturday that sparked a vehicle chase.
Jose Zuniga-Rios, 36, is charged with two felony counts of aggravated assault upon a police officer, simple battery and a list of traffic citations including DUI.
An employee at a sports bar at Satellite Boulevard and Pleasant Hill Road told police Zuniga-Rios was "trashed" when he stumbled to a 1999 Dodge Ram 1600 and drove away from the establishment about 12:30 p.m. Saturday, according to a Gwinnett police report.
Police caught up with the truck, which was swerving across lanes of the boulevard, a short distance away. Zuniga-Rios initially refused to stop but then parked the truck at a red light in the middle of the West Liddell Road intersection. Police in two cruisers moved in, but the driver wasn't cooperating, pushing away one officer who opened his door and latched onto his arm, the report states.
Zuniga-Rios put the truck in drive, turned the wheel left to brush one officer away, then right in the direction of another officer, before speeding away, the report states. No injuries were reported.
"I instantly thought he was trying to hit me or run me over," one officer wrote.
Police pursued the truck to a nearby apartment complex, where Zuniga-Rios parked and surrendered. En route to jail, he told police "he knew he was in trouble but wanted to say he was sorry for trying to hit us," an officer wrote.
Jail records indicate Zuniga-Rios, a native of Mexico, is being held for federal immigration authorities. He remains at the Gwinnett County Jail without bond.
