SNELLVILLE -- Gov. Nathan Deal recently announced the appointment of a Gwinnett County resident as commissioner of the Georgia Department of Driver Services.
Snellville resident Robert G. (Rob) Mikell will fill the vacancy left by outgoing Commissioner Greg Dozier, who is being named assistant commissioner, chief of staff of the Georgia Department of Corrections.
Mikell has served as deputy commissioner of the Department of Driver Services since 2007. Prior to that, he was the deputy director of the Governor's Office of Highway Safety, deputy chief assistant solicitor-general for DeKalb County and assistant district attorney for Rockdale County.
After earning his law degree from Washington & Lee University School of Law, Mikell practiced at Fain, Major & Wiley P.C. in Atlanta. He received his bachelor's degree in English from The Citadel and his master's degree in Public Administration from Columbus State University.
Mikell and wife, Sherrie, have three children. They are members of the First United Methodist Church of Lawrenceville, where Mikell serves on the board of trustees.
He currently serves as president of the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators Region II, is a member of the AAMVA International Board of Directors and Chairman of AAMVA International's Suspended and Revoked Drivers Work Group.
The Georgia Department of Driver Services conducts driving tests and issues all Georgia driver licenses, state identification cards and other regulatory functions.
