GAC’s quirky schedule, which began early with an Aug. 24 opener, took another turn over the past month with two midseason bye weeks, the latter coming last Friday. It’s led to more Friday nights off during the season than usual.

“We’re just anxious to get out there and play again,” GAC head coach Tim Hardy said.

The Spartans’ last outing, their 6-AA opener, was an impressive one. They defeated Westminster 30-0 with a stifling defense and a balanced offense. Trevor Dedecker, Darius Slayton and Jake Rose had big games on defense in that victory, while Rafe Chapple (198 passing yards) and Kyle Scales (138 rushing yards, 50 receiving yards) kept up their consistent offensive production.

“We played really well that night (against Westminster),” Hardy said. “That was a good night for us. We’re playing good football right now. We’ve just got to try to keep that momentum going.”

Much of the offensive success is due to the development of the line, which was led by Connor Crumrine, Daniel Yoon and Andrew Bartolomei against Westminster.

“That whole unit has really grown throughout the year,” Hardy said of the offensive line. “It was an inexperienced unit at the beginning, but they’ve really grown.”

A young Hapeville program, which has lost two lopsided region games, stands between GAC and two tougher region games to close the season against Lovett and Wesleyan.
