Opponents of college name talk with state leaders

AUGUSTA — Officials say a group hoping to keep Augusta in the name of a newly consolidated university has initiated discussions with Board of Regents members looking for a possible compromise.

Nick Evans, the chairman of the Save the A campaign, says that group members met last week with Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal and Board of Regents officials.

Controversy erupted in the Augusta area when the new school name was chosen for the merger of two Augusta colleges. State officials chose the name Georgia Regents University.

A group of local businessmen formed a group "Save the A," whose leaders met with state officials.

Group spokesman John Hall has said its mission is to lobby Deal and University System officials to put "Augusta" back into the school's name.
