LAWRENCEVILLE -- Police now believe last week's shooting death of 22-year-old Rashad Jones was the result of self defense.
Jones' body was found on the evening of Oct. 16 near the tennis courts at Lawrenceville's Riverstone subdivision. Gwinnett County police had responded to reports of shots fired at the subdivision, located near Ronald Reagan Parkway at the intersection of Bridge Walk Drive and Oak Road.
Authorities said last week that Jones was found with an unloaded gun, and that the shooting likely resulted from an argument over "some type of rip-off involving a scam."
Gwinnett County police spokesman Cpl. Jake Smith told the Daily Post Monday that the homicide has been deemed a self-defense shooting.
"Charges will not be filed against the 'suspect,'" Smith said.
Two young Lawrenceville residents -- ages 19 and 20 -- were listed as suspects on the original incident report. Neither Jones nor the "suspects" lived in the neighborhood where the shooting occurred.
Further details regarding the incident that reportedly triggered the shooting were not available for publication Monday, Smith said.
