The Longhorns led 36-33 until the waning moments of regulation when Chestatee kicked a game-tying field goal and eventually won in OT.

"It was a tough game, a tough loss, no doubt," said Lanier head coach Billy Wells. "It was back and forth all night but hats off to Chestatee, they played a great game. Our kids played a great game and it's a shame that somebody had to come out on the short end."

Lanier (3-4) broke into the scoring column on its opening possession as Tario Fuller scored on a 5-yard run. The drive was highlighted by a 53-yard pass from quarterback Taylor Grant to Marty Sanders. Lanier led 7-0 with 6:30 remaining in the first quarter.

Chestatee (6-1) answered as Brandon Thompson broke loose on an 80-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 7-7 with 2:25 left in the first quarter.

The Longhorns got back on the board again when Grant hit Jahbril Jones on a 10-yard scoring pass capping off a time-consuming, 14-play scoring drive. The score gave Lanier the lead 14-7 with 7:37 remaining in the second quarter.

The War Eagles scored again before halftime when Quan Clark scored on a 17-yard run.

After holding Lanier on downs early in the third quarter the War Eagles opened the third quarter scoring as Thompson scampered 63 yards for the score. Jordan Degraff then hit Clark in the end zone for the two-point conversion to give Chestatee the lead at 21-14.

Chestatee scored once more in the third quarter as quarterback Degraff scored on a 15-yard run. The point after attempt failed and the War Eagles led 27-14 with 2:48 remaining in the third quarter.

Lanier set up shop on the Longhorn 45 early in the fourth quarter following a fumble recovery. Grant then hit Jones on a 40-yard scoring play cutting the War Eagle lead to 27-21 with 8:24 remaining in the game.

Following a defensive stand, the Longhorns again struck quickly as Sanders caught a 75-yard touchdown pass from Grant. The scoring play gave Lanier the lead 28-27 with 6:00 remaining.

Chestatee then put together a 10-play scoring drive with Clark scoring from 21 yards out. After failing on a two-point conversion, the War Eagles led 33-28.

Lanier quickly moved down the field behind the arm of Grant. Grant scored on a 1-yard run to put the Longhorns in front again. Following a successful two-point conversion by Sanders the Longhorns led 36-33 with 1:16 to play.

Not to be outdone, the War Eagles moved the ball to the Longhorn 11-yard line where kicker Jose Zamora tied the game on a 28-yard field goal with 26 seconds remaining in regulation.

Following a Chestatee touchdown in overtime, the Longhorns rally fell short as Grant was intercepted to end the game.

"Our first year in region play, to play a quality opponent like this tough is some comfort, but just not right now," Wells said.

Quarterback Grant finished the game 11 of 29 passing for 290 yards and four touchdowns. Fuller also contributed 100 rushing on 29 carries.
