Last week: Lost to Peachtree Ridge 34-12
Norcross Blue Devils (7-AAAAAA)
Coach: Keith Maloof
Record: 7-0, 5-0 region
Last week: Beat Collins Hill 35-23
Norcross moved a step closer to a region championship last Friday with a win over Collins Hill, getting huge games from Alvin Kamara (312 rushing yards) and Lorenzo Carter (four sacks) among others. JaQuan Simpkins also scored on a 99-yard kickoff return.
“That win kind of separates us a little bit (in the region standings),” Norcross head coach Keith Maloof said.
No. 3-ranked Norcross faces a young Mountain View program that has battled a season of injuries, including the loss of three starting offensive linemen. Head coach Doug Giacone starts as many as eight sophomores.
The wins haven’t come as frequently as the first-year head coach would like, but the Bears are moving forward.
“I told them, ‘let’s get better every week and let’s continue to build this program,’” Giacone said. “I was here when we started this thing and I’m not going anywhere until we get this thing going the way we want it and have a solid program.”
William Tuider (10 tackles, one interception vs. Peachtree Ridge), Greg Burns, Matt Buddan and Bryce McCloud led the Bears’ defense last week, while Marvin Elam and Chris Bartlett were the top playmakers on offense. Senior Michael Hayes also is a steadying force on a young offensive line.
“We’ve got 71 kids, grades 10 to 12, who are fighting their butts off for four quarters every week,” Giacone said.
Last meeting: Norcross won 49-33 last year
