Lanier Longhorns (8-AAAA)
Coach: Billy Wells
Record: 3-3, 1-2 region
Last week: Lost to Eastside 20-14
Chestatee War Eagles (8-AAAA)
Coach: Stan Luttrell
Record: 5-1, 3-0 region
Last week: Beat Walnut Grove 51-0
After winning their first-ever region game, the young Longhorns have lost tough back-to-back games but they’re not out of the playoff chase yet. A victory over first-place Chestatee would boost their chances for sure.
“We’re still in the (playoff) hunt,” Lanier head coach Billy Wells said. “We’re still in the mix.”
A key to that upset will be slowing down Chestatee’s potent option attack. The War Eagles have won five straight games since a season-opening loss to North Hall, scoring 42, 57, 24, 36 and 51 points in those victories.
But Lanier has shown the ability to hang tough in every region game, it just hasn’t been able to break through with a win the last two games.
“We made some mistakes last week and it took us awhile to overcome,” Wells said. “We’re still growing up. ... We’ve just got to eliminate mistakes and learn to handle adversity. We’ve got to respond when we have adversity.”
Marty Sanders continues to give the Lanier offense a spark. He had six catches for 169 yards and a pair of scores last week.
On defense, Izzy Sam (16 tackles), Chauncey West (four tackles for losses) and Ricky Viengxay (nine tackles) were standouts in the loss to Eastside.
