Habersham Central Raiders (7-AAAAAA)
Coach: Stuart Cunningham
Record: 1-6, 1-4 region
Last week: Beat Meadowcreek 31-12
North Gwinnett Bulldogs (7-AAAAAA)
Coach: Bob Sphire
Record: 5-1, 3-1 region
Last week: Beat Mill Creek 47-28
North remained in a good spot in the chase for a home playoff game with last week’s win over Mill Creek. Bobby Young, Tony Bradford and Dante Sawyer help the Bulldogs force key turnovers that shifted the game in their favor.
“We took advantage of some opportunities, particularly late in the (first) half,” North head coach Bob Sphire said. “I think we’ve still got a long way to go to play a full 48 minutes.”
One bright spot last Friday was the offensive front, led by Andy Kwon and Alex Stoehr. That unit paved the way for playmakers like Michael Haynes (253 passing yards, 116 rushing yards, three touchdowns) and Cam Lewis (17 rushes for 118 yards, two TDs).
“That may have been the best they’ve put it together as a unit this year,” Sphire said of his offensive front.
The Bulldogs’ offense, which also got good games from wideouts Nate Brown and Caleb Scott last week, has played well in recent weeks with 45, 42 and 47 points in its last three outings. Meanwhile, the defense has given up 31, 20, 28 and 28 in its last four games.
North is a heavy favorite against Habersham, which beat winless Meadowcreek last Friday for its first region victory.
Last meeting: North won 21-19 in 1999
