SUWANEE -- The Next Stop Foundation, a local nonprofit organization serving adults with developmental disabilities, is hosting "A Taste of The Next Stop" today to showcase the organization to the community.
Vicki LaRoche founded The Next Stop five years ago with her husband, Stu. The organization provides opportunities for high-functioning, yet developmentally disabled adults to support and continue personal growth.
"When these young adults age out of the school system at 22 years old," said LaRoche. "Life changes drastically for them and their families."
The event will be held from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. today. A lasagna dinner, sponsored by Publix and prepared by the members of The Next Stop, will be served at the event, while live music will also be featured. Also, guests will learn the mission of the organization and what it means to be a member.
"This is not a fundraiser, but rather a 'thank you' to all of our supporters and an opportunity to introduce our community to The Next Stop," LaRoche said. "Our members, volunteers and staff are working hard to prepare an evening where our guests will get a 'taste' of what The Next Stop is all about."
The LaRoche family understands the needs of this group of young adults because two of their three adult children were diagnosed with mild developmental disabilities, so they formed the Next Stop Foundation.
Next Stop's vision is "to create a place where high functioning developmentally disabled adults in our community could come and continue to have opportunities to socialize, enjoy recreation and learn life skills," according the nonprofit's website.
