The Lions’ troubles continued with last week’s loss to Athens Christian, and the road doesn’t get any easier with a trip to Bogart to take on the fifth-ranked Wolverines Friday.

Hebron has slowly started to show tangible signs of improvement on offense, moving from three shutouts in four games to 10 points two weeks ago and 14 a week ago.

The return to health of veteran receiver Tyler Matthews, along with maturation of youngsters like QB Connor Holliday and RB Hunter Johnson, has helped in that area.

Now, coach Sal Battaglia wants to see similar improvement from the Hebron defense, which has had to battle injuries, youth and depth issues all season long, and is giving up an average of 32.2 points per game.

“We’re having trouble stopping anybody,” Battaglia said. “We’re kind of playing for the future right now, so we’ve move some people around. And we’ve got some kids excited about playing new positions.

“Believe it or not, our morale is great. The kids we have are pouring their hearts into every play.”

The challenge this week for the Lions’ defense will be to try to slow down Prince Avenue’s 1-2 running punch of Carl Mattox and Bryce Huff, who came into last week’s win over Commerce having combined for over 1,100 yards and 16 TDs on the season.
