Land to be sold by BOC, planned for homeless rehabilitation

LAWRENCEVILLE -- The Board of Commissioners voted Tuesday to sell a parcel of land near Lawrenceville to View Point Health, which will use the roughly eight acres to provide housing for homeless people recovering from addiction and mental illness.

View Point Health, a public agency formerly known as the GRN (Gwinnett, Rockdale and Newton) Community Service Board, provides behavioral health services to the community. It is planning a 21,200-square-foot facility on the land off Lakes Parkway just to the east of Riverside Parkway near Ga. Highway 316, sold after the board voted to approve it as surplus.

"(View Point) is a valued partner with the Gwinnett Superior Court's accountability courts and with the Gwinnett County Detention Center's reentry initiative to reduce jail recidivism," Commission Chairwoman Charlotte Nash said in a statement. "View Point works to provide a continuum of care that leads to rehabilitation and independence, with a goal for its clients to become productive members of society."

The project will ultimately provide "permanent supportive housing for homeless persons who are in recovery from addictive disease or mental illness," officials said. It is planned to have 30 single-occupancy units.

View Point Health CEO David Crews said the agency has been awarded a $3.95 million loan for the facility from the Georgia Department of Community Affairs. He said he envisioned relocating View Point's day program services to the same property sometime in the future.

"We think this is going to be a great project," Crews said as he addressed the board during Tuesday's meeting.

Under two separate agreements, the land will be sold for a total of about $1.05 million.

I wonder how much we paid for this land? Are we making money or was this one of the infamous land deals done in the county?

"provide housing for homeless people recovering from addiction and mental illness."

I'll bet this place is no where near Charlotte Nash's home.
