Westminster Wildcats (6-AA)

Coach: Gerry Romberg

Record: 2-4

Last week: Had a bye

GAC Spartans (6-AA)

Coach: Tim Hardy

Record: 4-2

Last week: Lost to Thomson 36-27

After diverse early-season schedules, thanks to being in a five-team region and needing six non-region games, GAC and Westminster have finally made it to the Region 6-AA opener, which will be televised by Georgia Public Broadcasting. The Spartans have fared a little better in the win-loss column so far, but they have a pretty equal opponent in the Wildcats, who lost to Thomson two weeks ago, 20-10. Thomson followed that up by beating GAC 36-27.

By holding Thomson’s offense in check, Westminster showed its stout defense.

“Coach Romberg does a great job, specifically on defense,” GAC head coach Tim Hardy said. “They’re really physical on defense. They get a lot of hats to the ball.”

That unit will test what has been a productive GAC offense. Kyle Scales’ running carried the Spartans’ attack early in the season, but the passing of Rafe Chapple (329 yards vs. Thomson) has been a force of late. Wide receiver Peter Whiteneck (six catches for 155 yards, two TDs vs. Thomson) continues to be one of Chapple’s main targets.

GAC’s defense, led last week by Ross Wood, also showed some fight in the Thomson loss.

“Our guys played really hard,” Hardy said. “Thomson’s a physical football team. We played with tremendous heart and intensity.”
