Outside of a narrow 19-15 loss to Class AAAAA power Gainesville, Buford has rolled along nicely with a completely revamped team that graduated such a large senior group off last year’s state runner-up team. Last season’s offensive line had nine seniors in its 10-player depth chart, but the new unit has come together well.

That’s been evident the past three weeks when the Wolves scored 43, 63 and 61 points. The offensive line helped Dontravious Wilson rush for 201 yards and three TDs last week and has given junior quarterbacks Taylor Mitchell and Montgomery Van Gorder, who alternate on every other possession, more confidence.

And the Buford defense? It’s pretty stout, too. The Wolves have posted three straight shutouts, getting outstanding effort last week from Bryson Jordan, Korie Rogers and Donte Gordon.

Up next is a trip White County, coached by former Peachtree Ridge head coach Bill Ballard. The Warriors, who share the region lead with Buford, went 3-7 in Ballard’s first season but already have surpassed that win total halfway through this season.

“They’ve really improved (under Ballard),” Simpson said. “The thing that really scares you, they’ve got a senior offensive line and they’re running that triple option well. They look like Georgia Tech or Air Force.”
