PREP ROUNDUP: Archer volleyball earns first trip to state playoffs

LOGANVILLE -- With its upset over Parkview, Archer punched its ticket to the state playoffs for the first time in school history on Wednesday. The Tigers (19-14) knocked off the Panthers 27-25, 25-21 to advance to the semifinals in the Area 7-AAAAAA tournament and clinch one of the area's four spots in the state tournament, along with Brookwood, Grayson and Parkview.

The Tigers opened the day with a win over Berkmar in the double-elimination portion of the tournament.

Jannell Whitfield had 19 kills and four blocks for Archer (19-14). Tiffany Cash had 22 assists and 11 aces. Avery Taylor added seven digs and Marley Wenum had five digs.

Meanwhile, Parkview went 2-1 win a win over Central Gwinnett (16-25, 25-13, 25-19) and Dacula (25-14, 25-12).

Justice Davis had 37 digs and two aces on the day. Cori Harber had 44 assists, eight digs, seven aces, five kills and three blocks. Meredith Tounds added 12 kills and two digs.

On the other side of the bracket, Grayson got wins over Dacula (25-20, 25-11) and Central (25-17, 25-21, 26-24).

Cailyn Fuller led the Rams (11-20) with 17 kills. Dkeama Alexis and Chandler Jackson each had 11 kills. Geordyn Jeakins added 28 assists.

The Broncos advanced by beating Grayson in the second match.

Parkview faces Grayson in the semis at 9 a.m. Saturday at Grayson, followed by Archer and Brookwood at 10 a.m.

SOFTBALL

Cabrales gets two shutouts in Archer sweep

LAWRENCEVILLE -- Nani Cabrales shutout Etowah twice to help Archer advance to the second round of the Class AAAAAA playoffs. Cabrales allowed five hits and struck out two in a 1-0 win in the first game. Jenna Graham drove in the only run with a double in the first inning. The Tigers (27-7) won the second game 6-0. Cabrales (18-4) pitched a two-hitter and struck out three. Jacqui Switzer knocked in three runs, while Alesha Mann knocked in another. Alliyah Williams added two hits.

Archer faces the winner of the North Gwinnett-Lambert series.

Collins Hill advances past West Forsyth

CUMMING -- Collins Hill outscored West Forsyth 17-1 in the doubleheader to advance into the second round of the Class AAAAAA playoffs. The Eagles (24-8) won Game 1 9-0. Aeshia Miles pitched five shutout innings and struck out nine to get the win. Amanda Chance pitched the final two innings to finish off the shutout. Calli Star had three hits and two RBIs, while Brea Dickey added two hits and three RBIs.

Chance came back to pitch a complete game in Game 2 as Collins Hill won 8-1. Chance allowed four hits and struck out five. Dickey added three more hits and three RBIs. Laine Simmons and Jaimie Hoover each had two hits.

The Eagles will travel to Milton for the second round next week.

Mill Creek handles North Forsyth

CUMMING -- Mill Creek had few problems with North Forsyth to win the first round series in the Class AAAAAA playoffs. Caitlyn Howell (8-5) pitched a complete game to help Mill Creek to a 6-2 win in the opener. Christina Evans had two hits and three RBIs. Lauren Bennett added two hits and an RBI. Emilie Lawrence also had two hits.

Morgan Bell and Heather Felt each had three RBIs in the second game, which the Hawks (20-12-1) won 12-4 in five innings. Carly Zabow knocked in a couple of runs, while Sarah Peery added a double. Felt (8-6) pitched a complete game. She gave up seven hits and struck out two.

Mill Creek will face either Grayson or Cherokee in the second round.

Peachtree Ridge hammers South Forsyth in sweep

SUWANEE -- Peachtree Ridge scored 24 runs in a double-header sweep of South Forsyth to advance in the Sweet 16 of the Class AAAAAA playoffs. The Lions (27-5) won the first game 10-2. Sarah Walker hit a two-run homer and drove in four runs. Andie McGregor had two hits and an RBI. Maiah Johnson added two RBIs and Savanna Turvy knocked in another run. Quinn Hill was the winning pitcher (13-3).

McGregor knocked in four more runs to win the second game 14-4 in six innings. Sam Pierannunzi had two hits, a homer and two RBIs. Johnson added three hits and two RBIs, while Brandi Mason also had two RBIs and two hits. Walker (14-4) pitched a complete game to get the win.

The Lions will face either Brookwood or Lassiter in the second round.

Wesleyan rolls past Chattooga in first round

NORCROSS -- Wesleyan hit four home runs, including two grand slams, in its doubleheader sweep over Chattooga in the first round of the Class AA state playoffs. The Wolves (25-8) won the first game 8-3. Katie Frerking had three hits, a grand slam and five RBIs. Dacia Jones was 2-for-3 with a three-run homer. Jones also pitched a complete game, allowing two earned runs and five hits to go with six strikeouts.

Wesleyan won Game 2 15-0 in four innings. CaraMia Tsirigos hit a grand slam and a two-run homer. Frerking drove in three more runs. Riley Henning and Jones each had two hits and an RBI. Victoria DiStasi also had two hits and two RBIs.

Wesleyan faces either Bowdon or Washington-Wilkes in the second round Wednesday.

Buford beats up on St. Pius

BUFORD -- Buford took care of business against St. Pius, sweeping the doubleheader to advance to the second round of the Class AAA playoffs on Wednesday. In Game 1, Bria Bush pitched her 15th complete game to lead the Wolves (26-2) to an 11-4 win. Bush (16-2) allowed two earned runs and four hits to go with nine strikeouts. Jordan Deep hit a three-run homer. Tessa Daniels had three hits and three RBIs, while Remington Hasty added three hits and scored four runs. Niki Cook was 3-for-4 with three stoles bases.

In Game 2, four players had two hits each in Buford's 13-1 win in six innings. Hasty and Deep each had two hits and two RBIs. Baylee Sexton scored three times, while Alexus Murray knocked in a run. Tessa Daniels (1-0) allowed no runs in two innings to get the win.

The Wolves faces either Franklin County or North Murray in the second round Wednesday.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

Wolves take fifth in Buford Invitational

BUFORD -- Host Buford took fifth place at the Buford Invitational on Wednesday with two runners in the top 20. Megan Ward finished 11th and Bailey Roberts took 17th. White County won the meet with 24 points. Hebron was seventh.

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

Buford finishes second in own meet

BUFORD -- Buford put three runners in the top 10, but took second in the Buford Invitational on Wednesday. The Wolves finished with 80 points, while Lovett won with 77 points. Josh Thompson finished fifth with for Buford. Justin Perkle was eight and Avery Webster took ninth. Dylan Forester of Dawson County won with a time of 17:24.
