LAWRENCEVILLE -- The Gwinnett Football League believes an alleged theft over the weekend by its now-resigned treasurer was an isolated incident.

GFL President Erik Richards released a statement to the Daily Post Wednesday regarding treasurer Shane Houston, who has resigned from the league's board after being arrested Sunday. Houston is accused of pocketing $500 cash while working the ticket table Sunday during the GFL's annual "cheer-off" at the Arena at Gwinnett Center.

Richards said Wednesday that all money from that event is accounted for and the total matches gate receipts.

"We believe this is an isolated incident," Richards' statement said, "and we will be hiring an outside auditor to confirm. The hire will come from the recommendation of our attorney."

Houston was one of multiple volunteers working the ticket table at Sunday's event, and was spotted by another volunteer when he allegedly lifted a stack of 25 $20 bills from a cash box.

Sheriff's deputies reportedly recovered a similar stack of money from Houston's pocket. The Buford man maintained the cash was his, but was arrested and charged with theft by taking.

The GFL is made up of 19 member associations from across the county, which in turn represent more than 200 youth-age football and cheerleading teams. Richards used his statement Wednesday to attempt to clarify the league board's role.

"Understand that Gwinnett Football League collects no funds in regards to registration of our players or cheerleaders, fundraisers or concession sales," Richards said. "The collection of funds and management is handled by our 19 member associations and their boards. We are simply the governing body that handles scheduling, age verification, certification of athletes and referee assignments."

Now about all the recruiting, team stacking and picking one team a year to make an example of. One of the most corrupt leagues in existence.

Who are you kidding! Especially the Hawks! That's why I do not allow my children to participate in their sports programs any longer.

The proof lies in the records. How can (2) 9 yr.old teams, for example, from the same association be 8-0 and the other is 0-8? Please don't insult our intelligence that "the teams were drafted/seperately fairly" at the first of the year. That is hard to believe. And it "ain't all coaching" either...Coaching can only take you to threshold, Talent takes you over it.

LOL, isolated to what? This season? Seems to me that just a few short years ago, there was an enormous scandal with the Mill Creek Athletic Association where one treasurer stole in excess of $100K! But this is an isolated incident.

No one should believe this is an isolated incident. Most people just don't get caught with their hand in the cookie jar. Kudos to the parent volunteer that noticed and reported him.

Exactly right "News". Kudos to her/him. This guy said he didn't do it. So did OJ. I hope he didn't, but it doesn't look good.

The GFL has to get money from somebody, do the youth associations collect the money then write the GFL a check? It is a non-profit but do the officers get compensated?

How come an attorney needs to guide on the next replacement? Full audit??

I think Gwinnett County Parks and Recreation needs to have a look into the organization. If officers get compensated then they need to look at taking over football operations at the parks. Gwinnetts policy is that they do not build parks for individuals to profit.

There need to be full disclosure here along with transparency Who get paid what and a general P&L would be nice..

If the 19 members collect fees independently, how do the officials get paid? I thought they were employed by GFL?

if you are talking about the Referees, they are paid by the association directly on Saturdays
