DULUTH The Southeastern Railway Museum opened its latest attraction, a park train ride, on Saturday. The trains will run on Saturdays throughout the year, some summer weekdays, and Sundays when the museum is open.
The trains were donated to the museum by Ben and Joy Black, of Birmingham, Ala., and their son, Bryan Black, of Atlanta. The Black family bought the trains in 1976 from the Birmingham Zoo to entertain family and friends on their Birmingham property.
"My family has enjoyed these trains for 25 years," said Bryan Black, who volunteers at the museum. "With my parents in Birmingham and me now in metro Atlanta, it seemed like a good time to find them a new home, and the Southeastern Railway Museum was a perfect fit."
The trains were an attraction at the Birmingham Zoo from 1957 until they were replaced in 1976.
