North co-op seeks holiday food items
The North Gwinnett Co-Op is asking for holiday food items, such as boxed potatoes, stuffing, canned yams, marshmallows, cranberry sauce, canned vegetables, corn muffin mix, chicken broth, soups, dessert mixes, gelatin and anything else that might be appropriate for a holiday meal. The organization also helps families pay utility bills and medications.
The co-op held a ribbon cutting on Tuesday at its new location at 4395 Commerce Drive in Buford. The new hours are Monday 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Saturday in the "Second Blessings" thrift store from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Chemo benefit to be held Friday at Ippolito's
A dinner and silent auction at Ippolito's in Suwanee is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Cost is $25 for dinner, and a free Mary Kay makeover will follow dinner. Products in the silent auction are 31 gifts, Initials Inc., Stella and Dot, Mary Kay, handmade pottery, a color and cut and a LaTida basket. The proceeds will be used to provide women who have just finished a chemotherapy treatment a gift basket of mascara, false lashes, brow pencil, brow and lash serum and satin hands. Terror on the Trail held at local park
Aurora Theatre will put on Terror on the Trail at Sims Lake Park beginning the last three weekends of October. The first tour will begin at 7:30 p.m. each evening, and the last tour starts at 9:30 p.m. Tours last approximately 75 minutes around the 1.1 mile loop. For more information, call 678-226-6222.
Shadowbrook golf tourney Oct. 19 and 20
Shadowbrook Baptist Church will have a golf tournament and conference on Oct. 19 and 20. The golf tournament, which is $35 per person, will tee off at 11:30 a.m. on Friday at Sugar Hill Golf Club. A steak cookout following golf and the conference will be $40. The keynote speaker at the conference is Danny Akin, the president of the Southeast Baptist Theological Seminary. Scarecrow competition to be held this fall
The Harvest Farm Community Garden Managing Board is hosting its third annual scarecrow competition. Gardeners, residents, schools and clubs are invited to participate. Prizes will be awarded in the following categories: scariest, funniest, most creative, best scarecrow made by a child, and best scarecrow created from recycled materials.
Place the scarecrows in your plot or inside the perimeter of the fence if you don't have a plot at the garden. Judging will take place Oct. 31, and winners will be contacted on Nov. 1. Attach the following information to your scarecrow: your name, email address and phone number. Scarecrows will remain on display in the garden until Nov. 30 when they may be picked up; otherwise, they will be disposed of.

Virtual Travel Club held Oct. 16
Prime Timers Pointe at George Pierce Park will host a Virtual Travel Club at 11:30 a.m. on Oct. 16. Attendees ages 50 and up will share their own travel experiencs, and hear a presentation from an experienced traveler. Attendees are encouraged to bring a sack lunch to the free event. Trip for seniors heading to Helen
A senior trip put on by Gwinnett Parks and Recreation to Helen will leave from Bethesda Park Senior Center at 8:15 a.m. on Oct. 18, and from the George Pierce Park Community Recreation Center at 8:45 a.m. The trip is for seniors to enjoy colorful scenery on the way to Helen and enjoy shopping and lunch. Park holds Mother-son Halloween dance
A mother-son dance, featuring superheroes, pirates and other critters is scheduled for 7 to 9 p.m. on Oct. 19 at George Pierce Park Community Recreation Center. Workshop for costumes held on Oct. 20
An award-winning costume maker will put on a costume workshop from 1 to 4 p.m. on Oct. 20 at George Pierce Park Community Recreation Center.
