Driver charged with hitting Berkmar student

LAWRENCEVILLE -- A 20-year-old driver faces DUI and other charges after he allegedly hit a local high student waiting on her school bus Friday morning.

Lawrenceville resident Misael Pena-Larios is charged with serious injury by vehicle, DUI-marijuana and improper driving in the incident, which happed about 6 a.m. on Champions Parkway near Lendl Lane in Lawrenceville.

When questioned, Pena-Larios admitted to smoking marijuana hours before the incident, and those claims were verified by a field sobriety test, police said.

Driving a 1992 Toyota Celica, he made a wide right turn onto Champions Parkway, hopped a curb and went onto the sidewalk before hitting the student, police said.

Berkmar High School freshman Dominique O'Connor, 15, suffered serious injuries including facial lacerations and a crushed pelvis, according to arrest warrants. At the time of impact, she was waiting for her school bus in a residential driveway. She's expected to recover.

Pena-Larios was released from the Gwinnett County Jail on $11,250 bond. He's due back in court Oct. 10, records show.
