Sugar Hill discusses traffic, energy

SUGAR HILL -- In its monthly work session Monday night, the Sugar Hill City Council:

-- Discussed whether to allow traffic from an insurance agency at 492 Riverside Road to exit the property's rear onto Suwanee Dam Road because exit visibility onto Riverside was insufficient.

-- Discussed whether to join cities entering into an agreement with Gwinnett County to initiate an excise tax on energy sales to manufacturers, replacing the state's tax waiver for manufacturers.

-- Discussed renewal of its contract with Buford's Phillips State Prison for inmate labor. In minor changes, the maximum number of inmates per work detail will be 10, and inmates will be prohibited from carrying gasoline in enclosed vehicles.

-- Announced that City Manager Bob Hail had signed a contract to construct an access road from Ga. Highway 20 north to 90 acres earmarked for distant public-private enterprise, potentially Global Sport United's marquee sports and retail center between Sugar Hill Golf Course and the Chattahoochee River. The road is scheduled to be completed before August, when the Georgia Department of Transportation expects to be widening Highway 20 there.

-- Announced it had notified the county and GDOT of the cost to relocate gas lines beneath portions of Ga. 20 being widened.

-- Announced the city has chosen a vendor to make its new flags, specifically three for outside and a ceremonial one inside. The self-proclaimed Recreation City is replacing its little-known flag that reads "City of Sugar Hill, Growth and Progress," with one including the city's name, its recreation designation and tree emblem.
