LAWRENCEVILLE -- The Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office was recently recognized for its health care standards at the Gwinnett County jail.

The sheriff's office has received accreditation from the National Commission on Correctional Healthcare for its compliance with the organization's standards for health services in jails. Sheriff's department spokesman Lt. Sean Smith said a team of five clinical professionals spent four days reviewing the medical and mental health services delivery program at the jail.

"Accreditation benefits the health of the inmates and staff as well as the general public by assuring that those incarcerated and released receive timely and appropriate health care," Sheriff Butch Conway said in a statement.

The review, Smith said, included a review of medical policies and procedures; interviews with inmates, health care workers and deputies; and a "detailed inspection" of medical records.

Corizon Health is the health care provider at the Gwinnett County jail.
