Cops: Sleeping driver hit patrol car

GRAYSON -- An asleep-at-the-wheel driver hit a Gwinnett County police officer early Friday morning, officials said.

Only minor injuries were reported in the crash that happened at about 5 a.m. Friday at the Grayson intersection of Ga. Highway 20 and Brackin Trace, Gwinnett County police spokesman Cpl. Jake Smith said. According to Smith, an officer's patrol car was stopped in the left turn lane of northbound Ga. 20.

The Acura being driven southbound by 50-year-old Loganville resident James Snyder reportedly drifted into the northbound lanes and hit the concrete median.

"(Snyder's) vehicle hit a sign on the median just before striking the patrol car head-on," Smith said.

Both drivers were transported to Gwinnett Medical Center with minor injuries, but were expected to be released on Friday.

Officials believe Snyder fell asleep at the wheel. He has been cited for failure to maintain a single lane and driving on the wrong side of the road.

Neither alcohol nor speed were believed to be factors in the crash.
