Instead of the Australian Outback in the 19th Century, director John Hillcoat and screenwriter Nick Cage's follow-up to "The Proposition" takes place in the Virginia Appalachian Mountains during the depression. Tom Hardy and Shia LeBeouf play bootlegging brothers that essentially dominate the local market until the Chicago mob (lead by a bulldog point man played by Guy Pearce) wants to move in and push them out. Thanks to a stunning yet understated supporting turn from Jessica Chastain, the violence level is less than "The Proposition" but not by much.
