LAWRENCEVILLE — Former Commissioner Shirley Lasseter will spend Christmas in federal prison.

Lasseter, who was mayor of Duluth for a decade before becoming a county commissioner, will begin her 33-month sentence for bribery Dec. 12 in a Marianna, Fla. prison, according to an order filed in federal court before Thanksgiving.

Earlier this year, Lasseter pleaded guilty for accepting a bribe during an undercover sting. Her son John Fanning and businessman Skip Cain also pleaded guilty to bribery and drug charges and are scheduled to serve 57 months each.

All three cooperated in a federal investigation, which lead to charges against businessman Mark Gary, who admitted he paid $30,000 in casino chips for Lasseter’s favorable vote on a waste-transfer station planned for the Dacula area.

Lasseter, who is staying with a family friend before reporting to prison, declined to comment.

How convenient...To have your prison stay "scheduled." She is a crook and ruined lives with her shenanigans. I wonder how much she took from the city when she was mayor for all those years. She should have already been in jail and not waiting for her reservation. This is not a hotel! She committed a crime and needs to get out of polite society quickly.

You really think 33 months is enough for this crook....Steal from the taxpayers thousands and thousands of dollars. I would get more time than that for stealing a big screen tv from Walmart.

Choke holds are cheaper, or so they say...

Pretty easy doing a post-mortem on this. Still lamenting that almost nobody in Gwinnett paid the first bit of attention when Bannister was running for re-election with his hand selected stooge Lasseter already bought and paid for running at his side. We had what - a 12% turnout of the 60% that even bothered to register, meaning that around 7% could be troubled to make these pitifully stupid decisions in the first place? It's our collective fault that these bad choices were made.
