SUWANEE -- A Brownie Troop recently donated 100 catnip toys to homeless cats at the Georgia Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Suwanee.
Troop 11502 collected unwanted socks from dozens of friends and family members and transformed them into catnip toys by stuffing them with catnip and fiberfill, then tying a knot in the ankle.
"It was really easy and simple to do. Almost everyone seems to have unwanted socks, and they're happy to have them put to good use," said Kathleen Shack, a Brownie Troop member.
"Homeless cats deserve a little fun," said group leader Diana Cole. "We learned that many shelters have no budget for buying toys for the animals."
The effort was part of Operation Happy Sock, which was founded in 2004 in northern Virginia. Thanks to the support of Brownie Troop 11502 and others around the country, an estimated 250,000 homeless cats get toys every year.
