WINDER -- Saturday will mark the opening weekend of Barrow County emergency services' annual Empty Stocking toy drive.
Each Saturday through Dec. 8, Barrow County firefighters and emergency team members will be in the parking lot of the Barrow Crossing shopping center in front of the Staples store. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., they will be collecting new, unwrapped toys and monetary donations for Holiday Connection, part of the local nonprofit Family Connection/Communities in Schools.
"We are asking citizens to come together as we help those neighbors in need," Barrow County fire spokesman Lt. Scott Dakin said. "Let's come together and make lots of children very happy Christmas morning."
Family Connection/Communities in Schools of Barrow County is a collaborative of several local agencies that work together to meet the needs of Barrow residents. Through its Holiday Connection store, it works with other agencies to distribute toys to those in need.
Those interested may also drop toys off at any Barrow fire station.
"All proceeds from this toy drive will again go to the Holiday Connection store," Dakin said. "This means that all donations will stay right here in Barrow County to help those of our neighbors that are in need this Christmas."
