Suwanee shade project under way

SUWANEE -- Two of Suwanee's popular destinations are in the midst of upgrades.

In June, the City Council awarded contracts for two companies to install shade structures at Sims Lake Park and Town Center Park, near the Big Splash fountain area.

The Sims Lake construction is underway, and the Town Center Park work will begin early next year. The contracts total just under $100,000, and were awarded to Deas Construction of Suwanee and Shade Systems of Ocala, Fla. City manager Marty Allen has said this type of structure was requested from residents in the city's 2010 parks survey, and the recently completed 20/20 vision plan.

Deas Construction is a commercial general contracting firm in Suwanee. It is licensed in Georgia and Alabama and mainly focuses on restaurants, self storage pre-engineered building structures and tenant build-outs.

Shade Systems is based in Ocala, Fla. and is a manufacturer of outdoor fabric shade covers, sun shade structures, canopies, tents, commercial umbrellas and shade shelters. Shade Systems has modeled the Suwanee project after a similar one in Sandy Springs.

The structures are made of metal and fabric in bright colors and geometric shapes. The shade fabric at Sims Lake Park is forest green. It's being installed by 5 Guys Contracting of Lawrenceville.

The shade fabric at Town Center Park will be aqua marine blue, and will be installed over some of the benches surrounding the interactive fountain.

"Our citizens have expressed a great deal of enthusiasm for additional shade, particularly at the Sims Lake Park playground and Big Splash fountain," Public Works Director James Miller said. "We believe that these additions will make our award-winning parks even better."
