Gladiators sign rookie Belzile; Duddy retires

The Gwinnett Gladiators signed rookie forward Alex Belzile and, in a separate transaction, defenseman Sean Duddy announced his retirement Wednesday.

Belzile earned 92 points (22 goals, 70 assists) in 63 games last season with the Rimouski Oceanic in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. He had 25 points (seven goals, 18 assists) in 21 playoff games with Rimouski.

The St-Eloi, Quebec native skated three seasons with Rimouski and had 183 points in 158 career junior games with the Oceanic from 2009 to 2012.

The 5-foot-11, 188-pound forward began the season with Wheeling but did not appear in a game with the Nailers. He was released by Wheeling on Oct. 18.

Duddy retires after appearing in 11 games this season with Gwinnett. He began his professional career last year with the Gladiators after he completed his senior season at Ohio State University and had four points (one goal, three assists) in seven games.
