DOT plans $113 million in Ga. road projects

ATLANTA — The Georgia Department of Transportation is getting to work on $113 million in new road improvement projects statewide.

DOT officials announced Thursday it had awarded bids to contractors.

The biggest project is a $56 million job to resurface 30 miles Interstate 16 between Laurens and Treutlen counties. Entrance and exit ramps will get a new surface as well. The work is scheduled to be done by July 2015.

Crews will widen 22 miles of State Route 35 between Colquitt and Tift counties to make room for turn lanes. That project will cost $17.2 million. Another $7.5 million will go toward resurfacing 16 miles of State Route 1 in Decatur County.

The DOT is also spending $4.9 million on signs allowing for variable speed limits on Interstate 285 encircling Atlanta.
