DISC SPOTLIGHT: 'Sunset Boulevard'

Sunset Boulevard (NR)

Movie: 4 out of 4 stars

Disc: 4 out of 4 stars

One of the earliest indictments of Hollywood, "Sunset Boulevard" is a pitch-black satire that was years ahead of its time. The two leads (Gloria Swanson as Norma Desmond and William Holden as Joe Gillis) are people the movie business has summarily forgotten and/or tossed aside. She is a former silent screen star with no use for "modern" filmmaking and he a failed screenwriter who becomes her unloving kept man. Co-writer/director Billy Wilder pulls no punches with his scathing view of the industry underbelly most studios would rather you not see. This truly classic film is a stupendous achievement on every possible level.
