ATLANTA — Democratic Rep. Hank Johnson Jr. of Decatur has defeated a Republican opponent to win a fourth term in Congress.
Unofficial election returns Tuesday showed Johnson beat challenger J. Chris Vaughn of Conyers with 77 percent of the vote. That's with 44 percent of precincts reporting.
Johnson's 4th District covers portions of DeKalb, Gwinnett, Rockdale and Newton counties southeast of Atlanta. It's a strongly Democratic seat and Johnson had to fend off two challengers from within his own party in the July primary.
Vaughn, a minister, raised little money to mount a serious challenge to the congressman.
