Lawrenceville delays QuikTrip rezoning again

LAWRENCEVILLE -- For the second straight month, the Lawrenceville City Council on Monday night delayed a business rezoning request from the QuikTrip Corporation at 181 Scenic Highway, an area considered to be the "Gateway to the Downtown Area."

The plans are to build a new QuikTrip three blocks from the old one, and relocate and construct a new Wendy's at the old caboose site. "We want to see how it can fit into the neighborhood," Councilman P.K. Martin said. The Council asked attorney Lee Tucker, representing the applicant, to report back to the body on architectural plans and signage for the multi-million dollar project.

"The redevelopment of this area can be a catalyst for the intersection," Tucker said. "We think it sets a good bar for future growth. Someone's got to be the first one in."

The Council also denied a request from the Day of Hope to close Perry Street for its festival which will run from noon to 5 p.m. on Nov. 17 near the Historic Gwinnett County Courthouse. The event will include a bloodmobile, music and merchant promotions.
