DULUTH -- For more than 20 years, a volunteer group in Gwinnett County has strived to help break the cycles of homelessness, poverty and domestic violence.

And once a year, the community gets to honor them for the work they do and financially assist them in their mission.

Rainbow Village held its Faith, Hope and Love Gala earlier this month, an annual fundraiser for the organization which provides transformational housing to homeless families with children. The event raised about $160,000 this year to go toward helping those in need.

Retired Atlanta Falcons coach Dan Reeves was master of ceremonies for the evening of Oct. 13, an event that featured the annual passing of the torch from 2011 Future of Promise Award winner and former Rainbow Village resident Steven Jackson to Tyera Braud, recent graduate of Norcross High School and Rainbow Village.

Following the award presentation, attendees watched a video featuring Rainbow Village graduates, both children and adults.

Rainbow Village CEO Nancy Yancey said the night was "a powerful night."

"It touches the heart and soul of those involved. Attendees get to see and feel the impact they have on the life of a child living at Rainbow Village and witness the successes that grow out of Rainbow Village every day."

As part of the gala, State Rep. Brooks Coleman and Duluth Mayor Nancy Harris led the live auction, which featured travel packages, jewelry, and football game tickets.

Rainbow Village is a one- to two-year transformational housing program for homeless families with children. Most of the heads of the households at Rainbow Village are women fleeing lives of domestic violence and poverty.

According to a news release from the organization, the program "offers a long-term program that includes support services for the whole family including life skills training, character building, counseling, career development, after-school programs, financial education and more.
