Auburn arts center plans 'Holiday Extravaganza' for Dec. 1

AUBURN -- Is there a better feeling than helping puppies and kittens while having your photo taken with Santa? Leaders at the Georgia Piedmont Arts Center (GPAC) and the Pup & Cat Co. are making a case thaat the answer is -- resoundingly -- "no."

GPAC and the pet group are teaming up for a "Holiday Extravaganza" from 3 to 7 p.m. on Dec. 1 at the GPAC cottage in downtown Auburn. Proceeds will support local arts as well as animals in need.

At the eighth annual fundraiser (formerly called "Festival of Lights") expect a silent auction of elegantly decorated trees, wreaths and gift baskets created and donated by artists, businesses, individuals and organizations from Barrow County and the surrounding area, said GPAC president Kathleen Gill.

Also of note: Santa will be in attendance to offer children -- and pets -- a photo opportunity and chance to share secret wishes. Pup & Cat Co. will have numerous rescued pets available for adoption.

GPAC will operate a Holiday Gift Shop featuring gift items created by members. Gill's philosophy: "Art is always the perfect gift."

"Plans for the event are still quite fluid," Gill said this week, "but this promises to be a memorable and enjoyable extravaganza."

Relocated from Winder, the not-for-profit center occupies a historic house in downtown Auburn. Its mission is to "cultivate, facilitate and promote a community in which all art forms can thrive cooperatively," according to the center's website.
