Historic building at UGA to be renovated

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) -- An iconic building on the University of Georgia's campus is getting a facelift.

The Holmes-Hunter Academic Building will get a new paint scheme and upgrades involving its columns.

Workmen this week were dismantling the exterior of the building's tall columns.

Tom Satterly, assistant vice president in UGA's Physical Plant, says workers will then install a historically accurate replica of the old columns -- partly made of prefabricated modern polycarbonate materials, partly with other materials such as old-fashioned stucco.

He said that once the new columns are in place, the building will be painted.

Satterly said the new paint scheme will be consistent with the building's traditional look.

The work is expected to be complete by the start of the fall semester.
