LAWRENCEVILLE -- Young readers who want to earn prizes for their reading skills need look no further than their local Gwinnett County Public Library branch this summer.
Children and teens can also enjoy free programs, activities and a chance to enter into the 529 Plan for College sweepstakes through the systems' summer reading program, "Dream Big."
Beginning on June 1 and running through the end of August, young readers can compete for $400,000 worth of prizes and incentives, which have been donated by local businesses for encouragement.
A full calendar of programs including puppet shows, magic shows, special story times and character visits are also planned and will be available all summer long.
In addition, Friends of the Library and Sonic restaurants have teamed up to offer a boost for the summer reading program: proceeds of the restaurant's sales from those who mention the library during visits will go to the program.
"Summertime reading is so important for continued learning between school years," said Nancy Stanbery-Kellam, executive director of Gwinnett County Public Library. "The library's summer reading program helps parents keep their kids on track while celebrating the adventure and imagination that is a part of the summer vacation experience. With support from so many generous donors, we hope to include as many kids as possible in all the excitement."
Those interested can sign up for the library's summer reading program, which is available online and in all 15 branch locations.
