Gwinnett's first high school baseball all-star game planned at Coolray

The idea, bantered about the past few years by Gwinnett's high school baseball coaches, will become reality on Tuesday.

That's when the inaugural Gwinnett Dugout Club Senior All-Star Game will be played at the Gwinnett Braves' home, Coolray Field.

"There's no question we have some of the top baseball talent in the state here in Gwinnett," North Gwinnett head coach Frank Vashaw said. "I think we've proven that over the last five or six years. So why not showcase it?"

The game will be played at 3 p.m. Tuesday prior to the G-Braves' 7:05 p.m. home matchup with the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs. Tickets purchased to the high school game also are good for admission to the G-Braves' game.

Vashaw and Buford's Tony Wolfe will coach the East team, while Parkview's Chan Brown and Hebron's Heath Kennedy as the West head coaches. The remainder of Gwinnett's head coaches will serve as assistants.

The Dugout Club's all-county teams were used to pick the majority of the rosters, then additional players were added. The selection process made sure that the rosters features Gwinnett's top senior players. Most of them are expected to participate except for Brookwood's Lucas Sims, a projected top pick in the upcoming Major League Baseball Draft. Sims originally committed to the game but had to decline because of a workout for a pro team.

Coolray Field has hosted its share of high school games the past two seasons, and the Dugout Club hopes that tradition continues with its postseason all-star game.

"If we do this right over the next couple of years, it has a chance to be a really good event," Vashaw said. "We have so many good players here, and that's shown in the playoffs."
