SUWANEE -- The City Council on Tuesday approved a zoning modifcation to allow a Jimmy John's restaurant to have a drive-through speaker.
Since the city last modified the zoning in 2004 for the area in Suwanee Creek Station, several restaurants, a shopping center and other businesses have moved in. The land once owned by Kathleen and Eugene Walls is now a QuikTrip gas station that's been open for about a month. Because of those changes, the requirement to prohibit outdoor speakers is not as important, said city Planning Director Josh Campbell.
So the council unanimously approved the change to give a green light for the sandwich shop to open. The council also approved right-of-way for Gwinnett County to construct a sidewalk on Suwanee Dam Road between Main Street and Peachtree Industrial Boulevard.
Tuesday was also the final council meeting for councilman Jace Brooks, who has announced he will resign on Thursday to qualify to run for the Gwinnett County Commissioner race in District 1. Qualifying for that race is today through Friday this week. Brooks has served on the council since 2002, and was the second-longest tenured council member behind Mayor Jimmy Burnette, who has been on the council since 1996.
City officials have unofficially pegged qualifying for the open seat to be in late June, and it will be on the ballot on July 31.
Attorney Beth Hilscher attended the council meeting and announced she would run for the vacant seat.
Hilscher's law practice located in Old Town represents small businesses. She's involved in the Downtown Development Authority, was active in the city's 20/20 vision discussions and recently finished Leadership Gwinnett.
"It's something I kind of had my eye on, just waiting for the right time," Hilscher said, and added she has children who are 15 and 11. "They're at good stages now, so timing's good."
Before a group of staff and administrators from Level Creek Elementary, the council also recognized the school for being named a Georgia School of Excellence.
