NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. (AP) -- A man is in stable condition at a hospital in Canada after plunging at least 180 feet over Niagara Falls in an apparent suicide attempt.
The man is only the third person known to have lived after going over the falls without a safety device.
Witnesses have told police they saw the man climb over a railing at the Horseshoe Falls just before 10:30 a.m. Monday and jump into the Niagara River. He surfaced in the river near an observation platform and made it to shore on his own.
Rescuers who were lowered to reach him have said he appeared to have chest injuries, including broken ribs and a collapsed lung. He was airlifted to Hamilton General Hospital, where a spokeswoman says he was in stable condition Tuesday morning.
