SNELLVILLE -- The staff at the Eastside Heritage Behavioral Health Center wants the public to know that one in four American adults is living with a diagnosable, treatable mental health condition.
May is mental health month, and Heritage -- an arm of Snellville's Eastside Medical Center -- is honoring it by calling on the public the help those in need of assistance.
"We want people to know that while mental health and substance use conditions are common, they are extremely treatable and individuals can lead full and productive lives," said Ann Wilder, program director at the Eastside Heritage Behavioral Health Center. "Too many people who are living with a mental health condition never seek or receive help due to stigma, lack of information or cost -- as high as 50 percent."
Inpatient programs at Heritage provide a secure environment for adults who are experiencing suicidal thoughts, extreme mood swings, distorted perceptions of reality or other life-threatening behaviors.
"We have an incredible amount of knowledge about how to identify and even prevent mental health conditions," Wilder said. "It's important that we spread the word about it."
