BUFORD — Michelle McKenzie, a dentist in Buford, won the Athleta Iron Girl Atlanta women's triathlon, held on Sunday at Lake Lanier Islands.
McKenzie completed the 1/3-mile swim, 19-mile bike ride and three-mile run in 1 hour, 25 minutes, 48 seconds. The 36-year-old finished the swim in 11:11, the biking portion in 52:22 and the run in 18:24.
She was in fourth place overall (and third in her age division) after the swim, but took over the lead in the biking portion and held it the remainder of the race.
McKenzie held off runner-up Amanda Harpring, a 36-year-old Atlanta resident who was second in 1:27:39. Jefferson's Sherry Bourie, 40, was third in 1:32:21.
Norcross' Adrienne Anderson, 41, was fourth in 1:33:33.
Other local finishers in the top 20 were Hoschton's Sarahlyn Cornett (16th, 1:39:30), Dacula's Kristine Heidger (17th, 1:40:01) and Lawrenceville's Maury Watson (18th, 1:40:37).
Snellville resident Brenda Ulmer, 66, placed second in the 65- to 69-year-old division with a time of 3:48:11.
