Norcross High grad already successful Web designer

SNELLVILLE — A young man from Norcross High School who is graduating this week is already taking the business world by storm, raking in accolades for a Web development and design business he built from the ground up.

Matthew Schurr is the Georgia recipient of the National Federation of Independent Business Young Entrepreneur Award, a scholarship program designed to reward and encourage entrepreneurial talents among high school students. For his efforts, Schurr received $1,000.

"I come from a family of entrepreneurs," Schurr said. "My great-grandfather, grandfather and father have all owned their own businesses. Designing and developing websites is only the beginning. Eventually, I hope to convert my business into a custom software development firm."

Kyle Jackson, state director for NFIB, said Schurr was well deserving.

"While some of his classmates were working for someone else, Matthew was working for himself," Jackson said. "We're very proud of him, and we know he'll do great things."

The program was established to raise awareness among the nation's youth about the critical role that private enterprise plays in the building of America. Since 2003, the NFIB Young Entrepreneur Foundation has awarded 2,300 scholarships to graduating high school seniors totaling more than $2.5 million.

More than 500 students nationwide applied for a scholarship. The organization awarded 131 scholarships across the country.

According to its website, the National Federation of Independent Business is the leading small business association representing small and independent businesses. A nonprofit, nonpartisan organization founded in 1943, NFIB represents the consensus views of its members in Washington and all 50 state capitals.

To qualify for the award, students must run their own business and are required to write an essay describing their endeavors and future goals. Standardized test scores, GPA and class rank also are taken into consideration during the selection process.

Schurr said his business is going well and he hopes to continue to grow it.

"I have attracted new clients. I have branched out from creating gaming-oriented websites to creating business websites and store fronts. Because it is profitable, I foresee my business being one of my primary sources of income during college."
