JEFFERSON -- In 2013, Jackson Electric Member Corporation plans to celebrate a milestone anniversary and is seeking stories, photos and other materials from the three quarters of a century that it has provided electricity.

In 1938, a small group of Northeast Georgia residents who were determined to bring power to their homes, farms and businesses were granted an electric cooperative charter.

Jackson EMC was born and began by serving around 1,000 meters over 349 miles of energized wire.

"Jackson EMC powered its lines for the first time in 1939, bringing what many considered the miracle of electric light to the area and making a tremendous difference in the lives of residents," said Jackson EMC President and CEO Randall Pugh.

The cooperative is seeking any memorabilia associated with Jackson EMC, from documents to photographs, promotional items to stories about the difference electricity has made over the years. Jackson EMC will archive donated items with the University of Georgia's Russel Library or will return items if requested. Red Oak helps American Cancer Society programs

ATLANTA -- In 2010, Red Oak began donating 100 percent of the proceeds from its recycling program to support the American Cancer Society's Patient Resource Navigation programs in Hall and Gwinnett counties.

Now, Red Oak has increased its support for the fight against cancer by sponsoring four Relay for Life events in the metro Atlanta area and the annual Hope Fashion Show. With the additional support, Red Oak's donations total $121,270.

To date, Red Oak has donated more than $100,000 to the American Cancer Society from its recycling program to help fund the patient navigation programs at Gwinnett Medical Center and the Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville.

Trinity Lutheran plans golf tourney

LILBURN -- The men of Trinity Lutheran Church in Lilburn will host the Ralph Gabrielson Annual Memorial Golf Tournament on June 2 at the Country Club of Gwinnett. All proceeds benefit the youth programs of Lutheranch, an outdoor camp and retreat ministry west of Atlanta.

Tournament organizers are signing up sponsors and player registration has begun and is open to the public. Each player's $75 registration fee includes golf, range practice, lunch, awards, giveaways and more. Sponsorship opportunities are available at five levels, from the $50 Angel Sponsor to the $500 Tournament Sponsor.

The tournament will take place on June 2, with sign-ins and warm-up from 9 to 10:15 a.m., and the shotgun start at 10:30 a.m. A luncheon is included, and the awards ceremony will follow.
