GRAYSON -- The final lane has opened on a wider Ga. Highway 20 between Grayson and Loganville.

Crews opened the majority of the newly four-laned roadway to traffic at about 4 p.m. Friday, nearly six months after the project was scheduled to be completed. About 1,000 feet of the project -- east of Brand Road -- remains two lanes, said Georgia Department of Transportation spokeswoman Teri Pope, who announced the milestone.

Crews still have work to do on the $10.9 million stimulus-funded project, including work scheduled for Monday to finish the left turn lane of Ga. 20 west onto Hope Hollow Road.

"The contractor isn't completely finished yet so please continue to use extra caution through the area," said district engineer Bayne Smith.

Since missing the contracted completion date of Dec. 31, 2011, contractor Gary's Grading and Pipeline has paid a fine of $1,191 a day. Through April, the fine has totaled $144,110. Pope said the project was 92 percent complete as of the end of the April.
