LAWRENCEVILLE -- Four residents were able to escape a fire at their Lawrenceville home late Wednesday night, officials said.
Gwinnett County fire department spokesman Capt. Tommy Rutledge said crews were called to the home on the 1600 block of Hampton Hollow Drive at about 10:15 p.m., finding "moderate smoke" showing from the two-story structure on arrival.
Firefighters were able to knock the fire down by about 10:30 p.m., but not before flames broke through the roof over a garage bonus room, Rutledge said. The blaze caused heavy damage to the bonus room and sent smoke and heat throughout the second story and attic.
While the exact cause is undetermined and under investigation, the fire is believed to have started in a closet near the bonus room.
Four occupants were home at the time and able to escape unharmed after noticing the fire and calling 911, Rutledge said.
No injuries were reported.
