GAC girls rout Dawson Co. to earn spot in state semis

DAWSONVILLE -- Rachel Garcia had a hat trick as Greater Atlanta Christian crushed Dawson County 7-0 on Saturday and set up a showdown with rival Buford next week in the Class AA semifinals.

The No. 2-ranked Spartans broke open a 2-0 game early in the second half and dominated play in the quarterfinal match on the road in Dawsonville. GAC scored twice in the first five minutes and kept Dawson pinned in its own end for much of the game.

Garcia was the only player with multiple goals as the Spartans spread the offense around. Fellow junior Taylor Wagnon had a goal and an assist. Brynn Finneran, Kaitlin Mayer and Kelsey Fervier each scored for GAC (16-2-1). Picking up assists were Halle Huff (2), Mollie Arrendale (2) and Hannah Huizenga. Goalkeeper Elizabeth White had the shutout.

Now the Spartans have a rematch with No. 3 Buford in the semifinals. GAC won the teams' regular-season meeting this year 5-2 and will host the Wolves on Wednesday for a chance to play in the state championship game.
