Harrison officials changed course Friday morning, agreeing to change the time for Saturday's Class AAAAA quarterfinal girls soccer game to help Mill Creek's players get to their prom.
Mill Creek athletic director Gary Long got the news early Friday that Harrison decided to play the soccer matchup Saturday at 1 p.m. The Cobb County school originally told Mill Creek that 5:30 p.m. on Saturday was the only possible option, which would have forced the Hawks players to miss most of their prom.
Mill Creek has eight senior girls on the team and head girls soccer coach Brent Leitsch estimated that 2/3 of his team has dates for Saturday's 7 p.m. event at the Gwinnett Center.
"(Harrison principal) Mr. (Donnie) Griggers moved the mountain," Long said. "He got it done. He's way up on our list right now. There are a lot of happy, smiling faces around this place."
That's a complete turnaround from Thursday, when the players were in tears after hearing about the 5:30 p.m. start time. Harrison had complications from a contracted event, a morning youth football jamboree, followed by a 2:30 p.m. state lacrosse match.
But Long said Griggers rushed the cleanup after football to squeeze in soccer before the lacrosse match.
