AUGUSTA (AP) -- Authorities say a disabled veteran's service dog is recovering after being shot during a burglary in Augusta.
Police say someone entered the 36-year-old veteran's home on Monday night and shot Balto, a 3-year-old English Lab.
The victim told deputies she had been away from her home for around an hour and a half when she returned around 7:30 p.m. to find Balto lying on the couch with a gunshot wound.
A deputy observed a side window at the residence to be open and unsecured.
