LOGANVILLE -- An end may soon be in sight for southern Gwinnett commuters frustrated at the delayed completion of the widening of Ga. Highway 20 in Loganville.
Construction barrels keep the cars on one lane in each direction, despite work that has added two more lanes. The job was supposed to be done at the end of the year, but delays came. And the usually slow work during the winter has kept the crews away for months.
On Monday, though, they will be back, ready to finish the final touches that will allow the widening project to be completed.
According to Georgia Department of Transportation spokeswoman Teri Pope, crews from Gary's Grading and Pipeline are set to work on paving, including correcting some asphalt work that did not meet standards.
The top layer of asphalt has to be laid down for the driving surface, a process that had to wait until the weather warmed.
Crews also have to finish guardrail installation, add the final thermoplastic striping, including sidewalks, install raised pavement markers and finish installing signage and pedestrian heads at each signalized intersection, she said.
While the work schedule is up to the contractor, Pope said the state is not taking the delay lightly. The contractor is facing a $1,191 fine each day that the project is late.
Through April, that fine has totaled $144,110.

This winter's weather has had no bearing on construction this year. To claim such on this project is insane. Surely GDOT is smarter than that. Must be issues with the contractor. Need to look to see how other companies have performed during this past winter. This is absolutely crazy down there.
